SCOTT HOCKEY LEAGUE HISTORY
In the winter of 1998, a group of military members from the St. Louis Metro East area wanted to increase the opportunities to other military members in the area, both men and women of all skill levels, who enjoyed and played the game of hockey, by providing them an easy transition into the local ice scene. Thus, the Scott Hockey League was born. In it’s early stages, the club began as one solitary team, but the demand was much greater than anticipated, soon the League grew into it’s own league, with enough players to form 4 teams, shortly thereafter, 5 teams, to it’s present number. Also, from those 4 teams, players also formed one advance team that competes with other teams/leagues in the St. Louis, Missouri, metro area.
In 2000, the need to organize and become self-sustaining was apparent. In July 2000, U.S. Army Colonel (Retired) Mark “deKernal” Henderson (28), led some of the other founding members, Scott Tobin, Rich Hornby, Brian Shaheen, Dan Picard, just to name a few, in establishing the club as a non-profit private organization. Plus forming a board of governors with one goal, keeping the cost minimal for all players. The key to the clubs overall success is due to many selfless hours from members of the club over the past years, by performing the administrative actions of player registration, roster creations, scheduling games, financial duties, webmaster, scorekeeping and refereeing.
For his efforts and overall dedication to the game of hockey, when he departed for his next great assignment, civilian life, Mark Henderson’s number, 28, was retired from the league.
Due to the founding members, past and present board officers and all the other volunteers and workers, the club enjoys a inexpensive means, without the loss of a competitive game, to those just learning to skate and to some who have played the game for most of their lives.
The league currently is a four team league for all level of players. We play several sessions, ranging from 10-15 games throughout each year. All league games are played at the East Alton, Illinois rink.
