SCOTT HOCKEY LEAGUE FAQs
I. HOW DOES REGISTRATION WORK?
Registration and Acceptance into the Scott Hockey league is based on a few criteria:
- Advanced Registration
- Open Registration
- Priority Classification
- Suspensions
ADVANCED REGISTRATION
When you are accepted to a team in the Scott Hockey League, you are reserved a position for the next session, for a limited time, before the registration is opened up to the general public. This is referred to as ADVANCED REGISTRATION. This is done as a courtesy to our players, and while subject to change, it’s been a long-standing tradition to reward those who play in the league with an invitation to the next session (providing there are no suspensions). Once the Advanced Registration time period has ended, players lose all priority status and then enter the Open Registration process.
OPEN REGISTRATION
This is the registration period that is open to any new, or returning, player wishing to enter the league. It is open to players of all skill levels. Players have to be a minimum of 18 years of age, although we will take 16-17yo IF a parent is playing as well.
PRIORITY CLASSIFICATION
After Advanced Registration, and the remaining spots are opened to Open Registration, those available spots are awarded based on:
1. Active Duty Personnel – This was the foundation of the SHL back when it was created, to give Active Duty service men/women a place to play while their service takes them around the globe. They will receive the first priority. To receive this priority, Active Duty Service men/women must show their current Military ID card. (This does not include retired personnel, independent contractors, civilian workers, etc)
2. Time Stamp – All other players are given a priority as to when their registration AND fees are paid. Time stamp priority is NOT based on skill, previous SHL play or any other factor. This keeps the process fair and square for all.
SUSPENSIONS
If you receive a suspension during the SHL session, you will need to be voted back into the league by the Discipline Committee, BEFORE you can register. There is NO guarantee of placement for any player, at any level, who received a suspension.
II. WHAT HAPPENS IF I'M NOT AWARDED AN OPEN SPOT
If you registered and paid the fees AND were not selected to play in that session, all of your fees will be returned to you, minus the $10 evaluation skate/administrative fee.
Typically the session will include an Evaluation Skate where new players can submit their payment.
New players are encouraged to pay by check, so that check can simply be returned to you and each party will avoid credit card procession fees.
Any payment questions can be directed to Aaron Mueller, IT Officer, or Matt Bednara, the SHL Treasurer.
III. WHY IS THERE AN EVALUATION SKATE?
Being that the SHL is comprised of players of all skill levels, we attempt to divide the teams equally.
The Evaluation Skate is NOT to determine how good of a player you are, but more-so, how you would fit into our current group of players so we can properly categorize you into our draft system.
The SHL does not award open spots to players based on their skill level. Being an experienced player with tremendous skills does not elevate you over someone with beginner-level skills.
IV. HOW DO SUSPENSIONS WORK?
If a player receives three (3) penalties, of ANY kind, for ANY reason, in a single game, that player is immediately removed from that game and is suspended for the next game, pending a review from the Discipline Committee.
If a player receives a 2nd suspension in the same session, they are removed from the league immediately and would need to be voted back in from the Discipline Committee
Players need to keep in mind that the SHL Board members reserve the right to remove players from the league for reasons not called by a referee or even off-ice events while representing the SHL.
If a player is declared to be conducting themselves in a manor that is unsafe to fellow players or detrimental to the integrity of the league, they can and will be suspended or banned from play.
